Northcare Physio is NDIS ready!
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports a better life for hundreds of thousands of Australians with a significant and permanent disability and their families and carers. NDIS will help people with disability achieve their goals which may include greater independence, community involvement, employment, and improved well being.
Effective 1 July 2017, the NDIS roll out will go live in the northern areas of South Australia. The roll out will continue over the next 6 months to include all areas in South Australia.
Northcare Physio has been helping people with disability for over 25 years. Predominantly our work has been concerned with musculoskeletal conditions and injuries, be that from an acute trauma or long term disability. Our multidisciplinary clinics can help with a specific physical impairment, activity limitation or participation restriction due to disability.
We are experienced working with clients with disability. For example, Northcare Physio has a client with Cerebral Palsy who has been attending our clinic for several years supported by multiple health professionals. Our client’s physical condition has resulted in difficulty with walking, and recurrent falls. This is mainly due to reduced co-ordination, balance reactions and leg muscle shortening (contractures and spasticity) resulting in leg weakness.
The treatment programme consists of attending hydrotherapy exercise sessions focusing on leg strength, core muscle integration, co-ordination and socialisation. Additionally our client attends our gym for supervised gym exercise. Our exercise physiologist focuses on balance reactions, functional movement patterns and whole body strength and conditioning. Our client also attends sessions with a senior physiotherapist for reviews when a particular issue arises, such as specific stretches to manage leg spasticity.
The team at Northcare Physio has focused on improving and maintaining our client’s independence. This has helped contribute to our client getting a driver’s licence, and improved activity participation including volunteer work in the local community. We have also promoted self management strategies for falls prevention and recovery if a fall occurs.
