How can a dietitian help?

At Northcare, our dietitian offers a multidisciplinary approach to overcome issues of co-morbidity. Our dietitians work closely with experienced exercise physiologists and physiotherapists to help with symptom management, and treat or control a range of health issues such as:

  • diabetes
  • weight management
  • chronic disease management
  • cholesterol issues
  • gastrointestinal disorders
  • food allergy and intolerance
  • high blood pressure
  • osteoporosis
  • kidney and heart disease
  • eating disorders
  • physical and mental disabilities

Moreover, an Accredited Practising Dietitian can assist if you:

  • have a new diagnosis requiring specific dietary modification. For example, coeliac disease
  • are failing to meet nutrition needs such as in anaemia or osteoporosis
  • have had a significant unintentional weight change – either weight loss or gain
  • need a better understanding of dietary management
  • need a NDIS provider

Dietitians are the only professionals accredited under Medicare and through private health funds to provide clinical dietetic advice. Medical Nutrition Therapy with a dietitian can be accessed via a plan from your GP or simply by booking as a private patient. In addition, Private Health Funds provide refunds for dietitian services.

Diabetes is on the rise, yet most cases are preventable with healthy lifestyle changes. Sometimes even reversed. Taking steps to prevent and control diabetes doesn’t mean living with limitation; it means eating a tasty, balanced diet that will also boost your energy and improve your mood. Our dietitians will help you to still take pleasure from your meals without feeling hungry or deprived. Working individually with patients to design meal algorithms, our dietitians and exercise physiologists highlight appropriate and realistic nutrition and exercise goals, and provide ongoing patient support, tailoring programs to meet patients’ lifestyle, motivation, and specific needs.

Weight management

Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight requires a multidisciplinary team care that offers practical, realistic approach to lifestyle modifications. At Northcare we provide the guidance, education and support required to ensure a sustainable approach to weight management.

Our dietitians and exercise physiologists work as team to help clients achieve personal health goals and improve well-being.

What to expect at your dietitian appointments?

At your first appointment our dietitians collect relevant information about your current health situation, any past medical history, your activity level and asks some general questions about your food habits. In your first session, there will also be questions about your diet and how you eat in a regular day. Collecting this information then allows our dietitians to provide personalised, accurate and effective suggestions that address your concerns.

At least one follow up session is recommended. This session is used to reinforce the provided education, as well as discussing the possible barriers to implement the suggestions provided in earlier sessions. Moreover, in most cases one session is too short to discuss all dietary aspects of presenting issue.

In conclusion, dietitian services are available at our Salisbury Plain and Golden Grove clinics in South Australia.
